Sustainability

At Bodhi respecting the environment & natural resources has been a matter of  belief, an attitude & a way of  working much before being sustainable became a buzz word.

It is with this belief that we’ve tirelessly continued to improve every single process at our workshop so that it would save on water, energy or even take drudgery out of our labour & give our craftsmen the freedom to be engaged in a creative process of producing the finest fabric.

A series of small but significant innovations have made Bodhi an environment friendly organization. These innovations in the form of energy saving devices have made us extremely versatile and capable of producing high quality printed textiles with minimal carbon and water footprint.

Use of Solar Energy

Fabrics printed using Pigment dyes and Acrylic binder requires to be baked at high temperatures for a few minutes for the fixation of dyes on the fabric. Through design and innovation we use a solar heated chamber to bake fabric which gives us the same result as a conventional energy intensive device would.

Rain water harvesting

At BODHI all the roof runoff is harvested in two ways.

  1. By recharging ground water
  2. By collecting almost 30,000 liters in large tanks primarily for use in the preparation of printing paste and dyeing

Room temperature Scour / Bleach process

We have successfully adapted at the cottage scale a recipe for room temperature scour/ bleach process for cotton fabrics that was developed by The Ahmadabad Textile Research Association for large production units.

Motorized Mangle

One of the processes for fixing Vinyl Sulphone dyes on cotton is to coat it with a hot solution of Sodium Silicate and then wash it off with water. A huge saving of Sodium Silicate and water can be made if the cloth is squeezed well to remove excess Sodium Silicate. At BODHI we have made such a mangle that can be operated by hand as well as by using an electric motor.

Eco-friendly Carry Bags:

Our carry bags too reflect our commitment to sustainability. Old newspapers are over printed by apprentices practicing block and screen printing into colorful sheets. These sheets are further strengthened by lining them with a coarse cotton gauze and carry bags made out of these sheets.
So we reuse newsprint, consume waste color, apprentices get to hone their skill and with cotton gauze lining the bags hold up to use many times over.

Paper is reused extensively at Bodhi and some of our accessories are made out of reused paper

Waste Minimization

We learnt to reduce waste very early in our growth due to lack of resources and shortage of water. We use comparatively very little water through judicious use of dyes and chemicals and whatever water is used is 100% recycled within the workshop.

Dyes and chemicals are carefully weighed as per well documented recipes. This results in a two pronged saving.

  1. Just the right amount of dye and chemical is used
  2. Less water is required to wash off excess dye from the fabric.
The amount of dyes, chemicals and water saved this way is significant. We for example do not need to use running water to wash of excess dye after printing. A few 200 liter drums suffice. This also leaves us with much lesser waste water to treat later.

Waste Water Management

All our waste water or effluent is treated and cleaned to a level that it is completely recycled within our workshop.

The effluent treatment plant has been provided by Green Infrastructure, Pune, India.

The amazing simplicity of this unique ETP is that it requires no electricity for the treatment process. This eco-technology uses a bio-active medium below a flower bed of canna plants to treat dye waste water and has to be seen to be believed.
